ABOUT ME

Why It's Called Ignite

The name Ignite was chosen to reflect the core mission and values of our program — to spark a sense of possibility, empowerment, and growth in every individual. Just as a spark can ignite a fire, our goal is to ignite the potential within each participant, regardless of their age or ability.

At Ignite, we believe in fostering personal transformation through therapeutic services and recreational therapy that promote physical, emotional, and social well-being. By offering personalized, person-centered care, we aim to fuel the development of confidence, independence, and a sense of purpose, empowering individuals to take ownership of their journey and reach their full potential.

The word "Ignite" symbolizes the beginning of a journey — one where participants are encouraged to discover their strengths, engage in meaningful activities, and experience growth in a supportive, inclusive environment. It's about lighting a path forward, helping individuals feel inspired, valued, and motivated to reach new heights.

In essence, Ignite is not just about lighting a spark; it's about creating a lasting flame that drives lasting change, empowerment, and fulfillment in the lives of those we serve.

My Story

My name is Katherine Locarno, and I am a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist as well as the proud founder of Ignite Adult Day Program and Therapeutic Recreation Services for all ages and abilities. But this isn’t just my profession—it’s my passion, a journey shaped by my own life experiences. I was born in Colombia and came to Canada with my family when I was just five years old. My childhood was deeply influenced by the strength and love of my single mother, who worked tirelessly as a nurse. She taught me the values of hard work, compassion, and the importance of caring for others. Watching her selflessly dedicate herself to helping people left an indelible mark on me and inspired me to pursue a career where I too could make a difference.

As a child, recreation became my refuge. It gave me a way to express myself, the confidence to learn new skills, and the joy of forming lasting friendships. From swimming lessons to community programs, these experiences were instrumental in helping me adapt to life in a new country and discover a sense of belonging. Recreation sparked a fire in me to share those same opportunities with others, especially those who face their own unique challenges. As I grew older, I came to understand the profound impact recreation has on people’s physical, emotional, and social well-being. This realization solidified my decision to pursue a career in therapeutic recreation. Over the years, I’ve worked in various settings, from hospitals specializing in forensic psychiatry and mood disorders to long-term care homes supporting older adults, as well as community programs and camps. Each experience deepened my understanding of how meaningful activities can transform lives and brought me closer to my dream of creating something truly impactful.

That dream became a reality with the founding of Ignite Adult Day Program in my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. Ignite serves individuals aged 18 and older, providing more than just recreational activities. It’s a place where community is built, where everyone feels seen and supported, and where lives are enriched through purposeful engagement. Guided by the five domains of health—physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual—our programs are tailored to highlight each person’s unique strengths and help them achieve their goals. In addition to the day program, I also offer one-on-one therapeutic recreation services for people of all ages. These personalized interventions are designed to help individuals overcome barriers, foster connections, and experience personal growth. My approach is person-centered and strength-based because I truly believe every individual has the potential to reach their goals, no matter how big or small.

For me, this work is about so much more than recreation. It’s about empowering people to live their best lives, to find independence, and to embrace their authentic selves. Ignite is my way of giving back to the community that shaped me, creating a space where everyone is valued, celebrated, and encouraged to thrive.

Welcome to Ignite—where every story matters, every journey is celebrated, and every individual is empowered to live life to the fullest.
